Gone are the days when plastic surgery was only for women. We have many men in our practice. Men are just as interested in maintaining their appearance as women with routine skin care, Botox and fillers. Briefly discussed below are some of the procedures that most interest men.
LIPOSUCTION
Liposculpture is appropriate for men who desire a more youthful and contoured appearance, silhouette and size. This procedure focuses on the removal of localized fat deposits that have been unresponsive to diet and exercise. Excessive fat accumulation in the neck, abdomen, hips, flanks, thighs, knees, legs and ankles can be addressed with liposuction. The incisions are small and very inconspicuous. Return to work in 4-7 days depending on the sites.
MALE
BREAST REDUCTION
Large male breasts (gynecomastia) can often be reduced with liposuction alone. This allows volume reduction with very inconspicuous scars. Return to work in 4-7 days. When liposuction is not appropriate, excess tissue can be reduced through a small scar around the areola.
ABDOMINAL
ETCHING
Etching is reserved for men who are fit and athletic with some muscle definition present but desire further demarcation of the abdominal muscles. This can achieve a more athletic appearing abdomen. This procedure uses several tiny incisions hidden in natural folds.
PECTORAL
IMPLANTS
Enhancement of the male chest can be achieved with the use of pectoral implants. It is appropriate for men who desire a more prominent and muscular appearing chest. It is useful for any patient that works out regularly and just cannot achieve the muscular definition desired. An incision is placed high in the armpit and a space is created between the pectoralis muscles. The implants are pieces of soft silicone.
MALE ABDOMINOPLASTY
Abdominoplasty or “Tummy Tuck” is usually reserved for men who have had a significant weight loss resulting in loose skin of the abdomen. An incision is required in the lower abdomen and around the umbilicus. Return to work in 2 weeks.
NASAL
SURGERY (RHINOPLASTY)
Rhinoplasty can improve a nose that is large, long, crooked, hooked or has a hump on the top. Very well-concealed incisions are made inside the nostrils and sometimes on the lower midsection. A splint is worn on the nose for a week to hold the tissues in place and reduce swelling. Most men are able to return to work after one week.
EYELID
SURGERY (BLEPHAROPLASTY)
Blepharoplasty can be performed for both the upper and lower eyelids to reduce excess skin and bagginess. Surgery of the upper eyelids generally involves removal of excess skin (hooding) and reduction of prominent fat pads. Surgery of the lower lids can be performed in two ways. One approach involves an incision just below the lash line and removes excess skin and modifies underlying fat pockets. For those men who have prominent fat pads without excess skin, the fat can be modified through an internal incision with no visible scar. Recovery time is usually 1-2 weeks.

BROWLIFT
A browlift or forehead lift raises the forehead and eyebrows, creating a tighter more youthful look. This can be performed using an incision that extends across the crown of the head for more severe drooping of the brow. An endoscopic browlift involves using several small incisions behind the hairline and employs a small endoscope to assist lifting of the forehead. The choice depends on the hairline. Compromise is sometimes required to avoid scarring for a receded hairline. Alternatively, hair transplantation can be considered to help hide necessary scars.

FACELIFT
A facelift allows rejuvenation of the face especially the lower face and neck. The deep layers of tissue (SMAS) are tightened and excessive skin is removed. Liposuction of the neck and tightening of the neck muscles are commonly performed. The incisions are modified slightly in men to avoid excessive alteration of the beard lines. Return to work in 2 weeks depending on the individual. Also see section in 'Face'.
NECKLIFT
Some men do not require a full facelift. For those whose skin excess is confined to the neck, a necklift may be a reasonable option. This can be accomplished with inconspicuous incisions behind the ears and in the chin crease. Liposuction and tightening of the midline platysma muscle is often performed. Return to work in 1 week depending on the individual.

CHIN,
CHEEK IMPLANTS
Chin implants are appropriate for men who desire an enhanced, wider or longer chin. A strong chin and jawline can be achieved to provide a more masculine profile. Chin augmentation is often combined with liposuction of the neck. Cheek implants are considered when the bony structure of the cheek is flat. Return to work in 1 week.
BOTOX® COSMETIC AND FACIAL FILLERS
BOTOX® Cosmetic is probably the most common non-surgical procedure performed in men (and women, too). BOTOX® Cosmetic is most commonly used to reduce the scowl lines and improve crow’s feet.
Injectable fillers act as an internal ‘spackle’ for facial wrinkles. In men, they are most commonly used for the smile lines or to plump the lips. There are a variety of fillers available. See section on ‘Face’.
SKIN
CARE FOR MEN
We offer specialized skin care and products for men. Good skin care is the most important, easiest and least expensive thing a man can do to deter the effects of aging. You are never too young to begin preventive care, and never too old to benefit from good skin care. We offer a variety of chemical peels, microdermabrasion and skin care products. More advanced treatments are also available once basic skin care has been established. See section in 'Skin Care' and 'Non-Surgical Treatments'.
