Botox

Botox injections are one of the most popular treatments we perform.  Aside from routine skin care,  it is often the first thing women (and men) try.  Patients often ask when they should begin using Botox.  If you can see the wrinkles when you are not actively frowning (scowl lines, corrugators) or smiling (crowsfeet), it’s time to consider Botox.  The deeper the wrinkle, the more difficult it will be to get a good result with Botox alone.  Don’t wait until the wrinkles are severe.

Wrinkles that are caused by muscle movement are improved when the muscle is weakened with Botox.  However, if you weaken too many muscles, you loose expression (or function).  That is why it is so important to individualize Botox treatments.  Everyone has a strong opinion about what looks good, but unfortunately (or fortunately) no one agrees!  The beauty of Botox is that it can be customized to suit individual taste.

Botox is injected directly into the muscle. It is approved by the FDA for the scowl lines between the eyebrows (the so called 11’s).  Off label uses include crowsfeet and many other facial areas.  Full effect of Botox can take up to one week.  Results typically last 4 months.

Botox also decreases excessive sweating in the armpits and is approved for that use.  It really works.

Dysport is a new agent in this category.  Results are similar to Botox with a few small differences.

Although the risk for bruising is very low for Botox, anytime a needle is used, there is a risk of bruising.  See ‘Preparing for Your Visit’ under Contact Us for over the counter products to avoid before injections.
