Fraxel

Fraxel uses erbium laser energy. It was the first of the ‘fractionated’ or ‘pixelated’ lasers developed. Active FX and Deep FX are more recent and use CO2 laser energy (see Active FX, Deep FX).

The principle of fractionated laser technology is to treat the skin with microscopic points of energy, surrounded by non-treated, normal skin (also microscopic). This allows a much quicker recovery time. The fractionated laser is not as effective as a fully ablative CO2 laser, but is, in our opinion, a better choice for most patients due to decreased risks of side effects. Fraxel is a good choice for melasma and pigmentary disorders caused by sun damage. It does not treat redness, rosacea or telangiectasias (broken capillaries).

Fraxel (SR 1500) can treat the face, neck, chest and hands. Generally 4 treatments are recommended. A four day downtime can be expected with redness, swelling and flaking (slightly less severe compared to Active FX).
