Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

IPL, Intense Pulsed Light or Fotofacial are all names for the same treatment. It is a light based treatment utilizing multiple wavelengths for photorejuvenation. This is the workhorse of ‘laser’ treatments. IPL addresses damaged skin and photoaging with a low risk of complications and very minimal recovery time. IPL is effective for a variety of benign skin conditions including lentigines (sun spots, age spots), telangiectasias (broken blood vessels), poikiloderma (redness and sun damage of the neck and chest), epidermal (superficial) melasma, appearance of large pores and rosacea. IPL can be used to treat the face, neck, chest, forearms and hands.

Photorejuvenation with IPL requires 6 treatments scheduled about 3 weeks apart. Total treatment time is approximately 45 minutes (including application of topical anesthesia plus actual treatment time). Patients may return to normal activity immediately after treatment. Results generally last a year or more, but because sun damage, Rosacea, and aging are progressive, touch up treatments are recommended periodically.
