Abdominoplasty
Abdominoplasty removes excess skin from the upper and lower abdomen and tightens the underlying muscles. This technique is often used to correct problems after pregnancy. For those patients with excess skin and muscle weakness below the belly button, a mini-abdominoplasty may be adequate.
The Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck Procedure
The first thing to understand with a tummy tuck is that most often it is done under general anesthesia which means you will be fully unconscious. In some circumstances it can be done with a local anesthetic and a sedative.
The procedure is done with a long incision from one side of the abdomen all the way across to the other. The incision is in a U like shape that is often described as looking like a smile. The reason is that it starts up slightly higher (near hip area) and gently slopes down to below the abdomen just above the pubic region and then gently goes back up symmetrically on the other side.
Recovering From a Tummy Tuck
Since the incision is considerably longer than other types of plastic surgery procedures recovery is a bit longer as well. Recovery period can range from 1 to 4 weeks before returning to work and other normal activities. Depending on the extent of the surgery some people may need to stay the first night or two in the hospital.
The incision will leave a scar but the good news is that it will eventually fade and can be easily hidden with clothing.
