Breast Reduction

A breast reduction (reduction mammoplasty) is performed to reduce the size of the breasts and lift the nipple/areola.  Breast hypertrophy or oversized breasts can lead to many physical and emotional problems if the size of the breasts interferes with normal activity or cause soreness or lower back pain.

Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction surgery usually involves an incision which circles the areola and extends vertically to the lower breast fold.  This type of incision is commonly referred to as a vertical or lollipop scar due to the shape of the scar (a circle with a single line going down).

Alternatively, breast reduction can be performed with a slightly different type of incision.  This incision is similar to the lollipop incision in that it circles the areola with a vertical line going down except in addition to that there is a horizontal incision along the lower breast.  This type of incision is referred to as an anchor scar also due to the shape that it forms (an inverted T with a circle at the top).

Prior To Breast Reduction Surgery

Prior to the procedure our breast reduction surgeon will ask you to sit upright for the pre-surgical markings.  This is so we can correctly mark where the incisions will go while you are in an upright position with your breasts sitting upright.  When the surgery starts you will be laying down flat and the incisions will be made based on the markings drawn onto your breasts.

Recovery After Breast Reduction

The recovery for breast reduction is similar to that of breast augmentation.  You’ll experience soreness and a bit of pain that can be treated with medication for the first several days.  Remember, a good portion of tissue was removed so experiencing some pain, swelling and soreness is unavoidable.  You will also have to wear bandages around your breasts for the first couple days.  You’ll be advised not to do any strenuous activity or heavy lifting for at least 4 weeks which also involves child care (caring for toddlers and young infants often involves lifting and stretching).

The stitches within your incisions will come out around week 3 and if necessary we may recommend wearing a surgical bra for extra support until you feel more comfortable.
